Consent to Participate in a

Research Study

You are invited to take part in a research study being run by Erika Patterson,  a doctoral student in the Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology. As a participant in research, you should read and understand the following statements. Ask any questions before you agree to participate (see contact information at end of consent page).

GOAL OF PROJECT

The goal of this research project is to develop a scale that measures people's attitudes about opportunities and lifestyle in U.S. culture. Ultimately, I am seeking to examine the relationships between several demographic and attitudinal variables.  Thus, you will be asked to complete a set of surveys and a demographic questionnaire.

PARTICIPATION PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES

It will take approximately 40 minutes to complete the surveys and demographic questionnaire.

Approximately 325 people will participate in this study.

You will view this consent form on-line, and then complete the surveys and demographic questionnaire.

Following completion of the instruments, you will submit your responses and view a debriefing form explaining the study in more detail.

Although web-based communication cannot be guaranteed confidential, once transmission is complete, the information you provide will be kept anonymous.

You must be 18 years or older to participate in this study.

RIGHT TO REFUSE OR WITHDRAW

Participation is VOLUNTARY and there is no penalty for refusal to participate.  This means that you are free to stop at any point or to refrain from answering any particular item or question.

PARTICIPATION RISKS AND BENEFITS

Your participation in this study is not expected to involve risks of harm any greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life.  The potential for minor emotional discomfort may result from participating in this study (e.g., exposure to offensive attitudes or ideas, discomfort from increased awareness of personal ideas about opportunities and lifestyles in U.S. culture).

Benefits that may result from your participation in this study may include positive feelings from helping with a socially relevant research project, or from increased awareness of social issues.
